The 24th VA in the Battle of Williamsburg

On May 5, 1862, the Battle of Williamsburg was one such moment of glory for the fighting men of the 24th. In fact, it was their first real test of battle.General George B. McClellan had landed the powerful Yankee Army of the Potomac on the peninsula formed by the James and York Rivers and was threatening the Confederate capital of Richmond. Joseph E. Johnston's Confederates (Robert E. Lee was yet to take command) were withdrawing to stage a tactical defense of the city and it was up to the rear guard to defend the move.Part of this rear guard situated at the old Colonial capital of Williamsburg was the Brigade now under the command of General Jubal Early, which included his old Regiment, the 24th Virginia. Although outnumbered and facing heavy odds, the Regiment, which formed the left of the Confederate battle line this day, advanced unsupported and left the cover of heavy woods to move into an open wheat field and threaten a Federal battery. This brave action of the 24th Virginia enabled the Confederates to stall the Yankee advance and allow the main army to continue its withdrawal, although the Regiment paid a heavy price. Eighteen men of the 24th Virginia Infantry lay dead on the field, another 13 mortally wounded and 63 others wounded.Only at Gettysburg, where 28 were killed, 90 wounded and 73 taken prisoner, did the 24th Virginia suffer more casualties.

March to Destiny
Our progress graphed below (Please see the links for more information on the school) ------------------------------------
It is the pleasure of the 24th Virginia Infantry to announce a 47-mile march from Sailor’s Creek Battlefield to Appomattox Court House to commemorate the 145th Anniversary of the retreat and surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia and raise money for conservation of the 24th Virginia Infantry battle flag.
This will be an incredible experience, to walk in the footsteps of the Army of Northern Virginia.. The night before the onset of the march, participants will be camping on Sailor’s Creek battlefield on the anniversary evening of the battle. The march will be limited to 50 participants.
Those wishing to participate, who are between 16-18 years of age, will be allowed only if a guardian or parent is also participating.
REGISTRATION WILL END ON December 15, 2009.
Acceptance of participants will be based on the number of days the participant will be able to participate and then by the postmark date on the registration packet. Many people will not be able to devote 5 full days to this event, and we are willing to let people walk on during the march. However, to keep the total number of participants high throughout the course of the
march for publicity purposes, priority will be given to those participants who are able to march for the greatest number of days.
Participants will be notified of their acceptance to the march by December 1st.
